The Duluth & Winnipeg land grant has been transferred to Brainerd & Northwestern RR. Co., by an act of the MN [Minnesota] legislature. The righteouness of the transfer was based on the fact that the D&W Co., has expended $300,000 in preliminaries while it has built no road and has no prospect of building any, while the B&NW Ry., guaranteed to go ahead with construction at once. The object of the grant was to encourage the opening up a portion of MN that now is inaccessible to transportation [and] thus to induce settlement.
