The Boom is Setting in.
The fact that on the first of March many of the leading mines of the county increased the wages of their employees, and that the MH&O shops in the city started up on full time, taking back all the old men and putting on additional as well, together with the active preparations which the mines and the railroads are making for a big shipping season, make it evident that the boom is making itself felt in the peninsula. The small mines are starting up. and some of them will make a very respectful showing in the statement of the output of the district this season. This will cause activity in all branches of industry and merchants are already getting ready for a
heavy business.
The cities of the county will keep pace with the boom, and its influece will hasten their growth and development. Before the close of 1887 Marquette and her sister cities will have direct rail communication with the Gogebic range by the M&N besides a competing line to Chicago, 40 miles shorter than the C&NW. The completion of the DSS&A this year will give direct communication with the great northwest and will place Marquette in a great highway of transcontinental traffic, and as the new road will hasten the development of the resources and natural advantages of the upper peninsula just so much will it hasten the growth of population, importance and wealth of these cities. The current of events seem to be setting our way.
