A Line Deposit
Negaunee - Bates & Chantler who own and operate two large limekilns at Palms, on the Mackinac division of the South Shore have determined to establish a depot for lime in this city and for that purpose have leased a portion of the old Mackinaw station on Lake st., a building admirably suited for their purposes, and will have a large supply of barreled lime there at the end of the week. Mr. George E. French has been appointed their agent here and will deliver lime at any desired place; orders may be left at his house or at Delf's hardware store.
The firm deals both in lime and limestone and as their kilns are situated right beside a deposit of the stone Bates & Chantler can make lime cheaper than any other concern on the peninsula. They employ 14 men and are running two large kilns, but their trade is increasing so rapidly that two more kilns will be built next summer. Builders in Marquette have tried their lime and testify so its superior qualities. One prominent builder here has been bringing lime from them by the carload this season,but now that a stock is to be kept onhand here and delivered as wanted their trade will boom in Marquette as their lime is the cheapest in the market.
