Reducing Expenses
In order to "reduce expenses" the DSS&A Ry., [*,] management yesterday began laying off some of their employes. It is said that nearly 60 men were laid off at the shops, besides quite a number of yard men and clerks in the various offices in the city. This is unfortunate as at this season of the year our laboring men are especially in need of steady employment in order to prepare them for the long winter before them. It is to be hoped that the reductions in the working force will be but temporary as it is probable that the business will warrant a full force of men at an early day.
